The Minister of Interior held a meeting with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General within the framework of the Regional Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The Minister of the Interior, Local Communities, and Urban Planning, Mr. Ibrahim Mourad, met with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative, Kamal Kishore, during his visit to Kuwait as part of the Sixth Arab Regional Forum on Disaster Risk Reduction. The meeting was also attended by the Algerian Ambassador to Kuwait.

During the discussions, the Minister presented Algeria’s newly adopted legal framework for disaster prevention and response, which expands the classification of risks to 18 types and introduces advanced mechanisms inspired by the Sendai Framework. He also reaffirmed Algeria’s readiness to contribute to relief operations through internationally recognized civil protection teams, whose professionalism has been demonstrated in past interventions in Turkey, Syria, and Libya.

Furthermore, the Minister underscored the need for intensified UN efforts to combat desertification and drought in Africa, highlighting the crucial role played by the Algerian Agency for Solidarity and International Cooperation in this domain. In turn, the UN representative commended Algeria’s expertise in disaster mitigation and called for its dissemination and exchange with other countries to enhance international capacities in addressing environmental and humanitarian challenges.
